Description

On March 30th, 1964, a pipeline at the Agesta nuclear power station in Farsta, Stockholm, Sweden, was gleaming brightly in the sun. The power station, built at a cost of $12 million and the first of its kind in Sweden, is the prototype for the use of nuclear energy in the Swedish electricity industry. The station, with the exception of a turbine plant, has been built inside a huge rock and is expected to provide central heating for up to 9,000 households in the nearby suburb of Farsta. With electricity consumption increasing by an average of five per cent a year, it is estimated that new sources of electric power will be needed within the next fifteen years. On March 30th, 1964, a pipeline at the Agesta nuclear power station in Farsta, Stockholm, Sweden, was gleaming brightly in the sun. ATOMIC HEAT FOR STOCKHOLM SUBURBANITES March 30th 1964 PAR 108956-1 (PNR/P-R) ATOMIC HEAT FOR STOCKHOLM SUBURBANITES The gleaming stainless steel piping is part of the reactor plant at the Agesta nuclear power station, first of its kind in Sweden. And the shining new plant reflects a warm future for 9,000 households in the nearby Stockholm suburb of Farsta. They will have their central heating supplied by it through heat exchangers. Built at a cost of $12 million, the station (with the exception of the turbine plant) has been built inside a huge rock. It is the prototype for the use of nuclear energy in the Swedish electricity industry. Despite the country’s water power and other resources for electricity production, it is estimated that new sources of electric power will be needed within the next 15 years, for consumption has been increasing at the rate of five per cent a year.
