The West Oxfordshire District Council housing committee has recommended selling the site on the private market, but villagers are concerned that a private developer might wish to demolish the homes. The final decision will be made next month by the full council.Nearly 700 letters were sent to households in the village of Long Hanborough, West Oxfordshire, in an attempt to save four century-old council homes from demolition. Village rallies to save houses Virtually everyone in a West Oxfordshire village wants to save a block of four century- old houses empty from the bulldozer. For several years no-one has lived in the four council omes at 69-71 Millwood nd, Long Hanborough, ecause of the need for xtensive repairs. But, with a possible hreat of demolition, villa- gers have now appealed to save them. At a meeting of West Oxfordshire District Coun- cil housing committee local representative Mrs Sheila Kernahan said feeling in the village was unanimous. She wrote about 700 let- ters to households in the village and virtually everyone replied. “The houses are part of Old hanborough and the feeling is that they ought to be left alone. No-one wants to see them knocked lown,” said Mrs Kemahan. But the future of the homes, converted many years ago from an old fac- ory building, will remain incertain for sometime yet. Repairs and renovation re estimated at around III IT The cottages at Millwood 85,000 and the committee felt the price was too high to pay out of public money. An option of selling the homes off individually to young couples prepared to do the repair work them- selves was also ruled out. Instead the committee has recommended selling the whole site on the pri- End vate market. The final deci- ‘sion will be made next month by the full council. Mrs Kernahan conceded that if the plan does go ahead there will be no guarantee that the homes would be saved. A private developer might wish to demolish them, she said. 21 AUCTOR 69%
