Young cartoonist CHAVES Ma A 14-year-old Oxford schoolboy is mak- ing a name for himself as a cartoonist. Paul Downes, of Horseman Close, Marston, impressed the judges in a cartoon competition so much that he took both first and second prize in his age group. And now he is sharpening his talents ready for the final of the National Young Cartoonist of the Year contest in London next month. Paul, a pupil at Cherwell School, won the 14-18 year age group of the Bir- mingham and Central regional final of the competition. Over 5,500 entries from all over Europe were received for the competi- tion, now in its ninth year. Paul improved on his third place in his age group in the regional final last year with this year’s portfolio of cartoons included one about the channel tunnel. “I had a channel tunnel digger, split down the middle, with one half French and the other half English. It was called Bert Pierre,” said Paul. A keen draughtsman, Paul decided to try his hand at cartoons a few years ago and he also enjoys making comic strips. Friends and relatives have received examples of his work and Cherwell School asked Paul to design the front cover of a booklet about the school. He is hoping his drawing skill will land him a job in the design/advertising field.
