Major General William R. Peers is the Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam since January 1968 as the Deputy Commander of Field Force I. He was born in 1914 and educated at the University of California. He joined the Army in 1938 and served in Burma and China during World War II. After a period of training at the Central Intelligence Agency, he served in France and Germany. In 1964, he was appointed as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Military Operations for Special Operations in Washington. In 1965, he became the Special Assistant for Counterinsurgency and Special Activities. In 1967, he went to Vietnam as the Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division.
