Varahagiri Venkata Giri, also known as V. V. Giri, served as the President of India from 1969. He was previously the Vice-President and defeated the official Congress Party presidential nominee with the support of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Born in 1894, he studied at the National University in Dublin. Before entering politics, Giri was involved in trade union activities and served as the General Secretary and later President of the All-India Railwaymen’s Federation in the 1930s. He held various ministerial positions and also served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Mysore states.
