Veteran tea lady Lilian Taphouse celebrated her 60th birthday with a special thank-you from her colleagues at Morland’s Brewery in Abingdon. To comply with Government regulations on part-time work and pensions, Lilian was required to retire formally for a day. Her colleagues presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a big box of chocolates to mark the occasion. Office staff at Morland’s Brewery at Abingdon think so much of her cheery chat she dis- penses with the daily cuppa, they asked her to carry on working as a part-time pensioner. Bouquet To mark her official “retirement” on her 60th birthday, they presented Lilian with a bouquet of flowers and a big box of chocolates as a special thank-you for the thousands of cups of tea and coffee she has poured out during her 18 years at the Ock Street brewery. Lilian, a cockney who moved to Abingdon with her family during the Second World War to escape the London blitz, couldn’t wait to be back behind her trolley today. Pleasure “I love the job because they are such nice people to work with,” she said, as she enjoyed her single day’s retirement at her home in Boxhill Walk, Abingdon. Lilian had to retire formally for a day to comply with Government regulations on part-time work and pensions. “During the course of the day I must pour out over 250 cups of tea and coffee from by 8lb kettle, which is hard work sometimes.
