18-year-old Giles Warner from Wallingford, who is currently studying for his A-levels at Magdalen College School in Oxford, is preparing to take part in a World Challenge expedition to the Zanskar Valley in the Indian Himalayas. Giles will trek to the small Tibetan village of Pedum, crossing fast-flowing rivers and a 5,000-metre pass, on the way to the Phuctal Gompa, a Tibetan monastery carved out of the mountainside. M Giles has always wanted to go to the Himalayas. He already has some knowledge of mountain craft, having done hill walking in the Lake District and Wales and an Outward Bound course. He also trains hard at his hobby of rowing. One of his biggest problems is the 1,400 he has to raise towards the cost of the trip.
