West Indian all-rounder Garfield Sobers was selected to join the West Indies touring party to England in the summer of 1963. Sobers had a successful season of Sheffield Shield cricket playing for South Australia, becoming the first cricket player in an Australian first-class season to score 1,000 runs and take 50 wickets.
